Baltimore Rescue Mission Clinic

What is Baltimore Rescue Mission Clinic?

The Baltimore Rescue Mission serves about 130-140 homeless men daily at a shelter located on 4 North Central Avenue in East Baltimore. The Medical Clinic was started in the early 1970s under the leadership of Dr. Martin L. Singewald. It is currently under the direction of Dr. John S. Dalton II. The clinic operates through the generosity of Dr. Dalton on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 PM. The mission of the Medical Clinic is to provide free, high-quality medical care to the homeless population of Baltimore City. Each week, Dr. Dalton is joined by several Hopkins undergraduates and medical students in providing basic health services to the men and women of the shelter. The students have the advantage both of interacting directly with patients and working with the doctor to develop an assessment and therapeutic plan. Dr. Dalton strives to provide a setting in which students assume the role of a caregiver, in that they communicate extensively with homeless patients, take a detailed medical history, reach a diagnosis, and administer the proper treatment. They also perform basic physical examinations, including measuring heart rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels.

Information for New Volunteers

We are glad that you would like to volunteer for Baltimore Rescue Mission Clinic! Every Wednesday, about eight Hopkins undergraduates meet behind Shriver Hall at 6:20PM to go volunteer at Baltimore Rescue Mission Clinic, which is located in downtown Baltimore. The clinic is atop a men's homeless shelter. Overall, we essentially take care of patients from getting their history and complaints to giving shots and providing the necessary medication, if available. It is a pretty in-depth overview of what urban medicine is all about. There are a lot of volunteers for BRMC and space is limited, so follow the instructions on the "Sign-Up" page. Don t forget to email brmclinic@gmail.com to be added to the email list. We will send a group email notifying who got signed up each week.
