SHPE History The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation. JHU-SHPE History The chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at the Johns Hopkins University is reaching a turning point in its young history. This year most of the founding members of the chapter will be entering the professional world. The chapter has become a source of support for the Latino community in JHU and Baltimore. From the humble beginnings a couple of years ago, JHU-SHPE has accomplished some of its landmark goals to establish itself as a permanent contributor to the goals of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. JHU-SHPE was founded on December 16, 2003. From there, we have grown attracting highly committed professional members. After a rocky start, JHU-SHPE began functioning as a regular SHPE chapter under the leadership of then president Grace Gonzalez. Under her administration, JHU-SHPE started setting traditions that have been carried on in this year, the Annual Gala Banquet, the Tools for School supply drive, SHPE-Game night, and the Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers Today Community Service program. This year, the Hopkins SHPErs have continued this commitment to the success of the chapter. The fiscal year of 2005-2006 is one in which SHPE at Johns Hopkins has accomplished many noteworthy goals. Our chapter was able to obtain ACE funding for the very first time in our short history. We have also established our first working relationship with an industrial partner of SHPE, Medtronic. Under our current president, Leandra Uribe, the chapter took a leading role in coordinating and assisting in the planning of the Hopkin’s very first ever Latino Heritage Month Closing Ceremonies. During this year, we had on site visits arranged to some of SHPE Industrial Partners’ campuses located in the area, Northrop Grumman and Proctor & Gamble. We expanded our chapter development and recruitment efforts; keeping up an exciting pace of growth and development. By continuing this pace, JHU-SHPE will be a permanent presence on the Hopkins campus, and a strong contributor to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. For the second year in a row, a chapter member has risen to the role of sub RSR for the Mid Atlantic Region. Also this year, one of our members made the chapter famous by performing the national anthem at this year’s ETCC. The end of this year will see a changing of the guard as many of the first Hopkins SHPErs will be joining the professional world. Last year, our first member graduated and entered the professional world as an employee of Boeing. This year, most of the founding members will be parting ways with SHPE at Johns Hopkins. Some will be entering the professional world; while others will be ending off to graduate school. This year’s seniors are committed to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and will continue to support as members of local chapters in the respective areas they will be residing. However, all of them look with pride and hope in the chapter they helped create because of the tradition of excellence and the excellent people left to keep SHPE at JHU alive. |
